Find a Private Music Teacher

Suggestions for finding the right private teacher:
  • Ask your school music teacher for recommendations.
  • Ask orchestra, band, or choir contacts for recommendations.
  • Ask guest clinicians for suggestions.
  • Contact the music departments of local universities for resources.

Knowing what to ask may seem daunting.  Here are some discussion tips:
  • What are the student's goals?  Be as realistic as possible.
  • How often are lessons?  Once per week is typical.
  • What are the teacher's practice expectations?  How many hours per day?  How many days per week?
  • What is the teaching methodology? For example, Suzuki or traditional?
  • What is the cost per lesson and what is the payment schedule?
  • Consider asking whether a trial lesson is possible.

Bexley Music Parents does not endorse particular private music teachers and encourages you to carefully screen teachers and ask for references.
